With so much time on our phones and computers, it’s easy to understand why so many people have stiff necks.  While sometimes the pain is minor, in many cases it can be much more uncomfortable.

It can affect our sleep, productivity, and even our mood.  If you’ve got a stiff neck and you can’t seem to shake it, take a look at some of these remedies.

Get a Quality Pillow

When your neck is weak, the last thing you want to do is lay on a poor quality pillow every night.  Sleeping on a pillow which is either too thin or too thick can make the problem even worse.

Buy a quality pillow which supports the natural contours of your neck without supporting it remaining in an unnatural position.  

Stretch

Try to engage in stretching a few times a day when you have a moment.  Hold your head straight and stretch your head from side to side with your eyes remaining forward.

Remember to move slowly and if it feels painful, stop immediately.  

Limit Time With Head Down

The key to getting rid of a stiff neck is eliminating what caused the pain in the first place.  Unfortunately for people who have jobs which require them to look down, it’s not an option.

Therefore, try to take frequent breaks during periods when your neck is bent forward.  Take these opportunities to rest and practice some stretching exercise.

Be Careful When You Sleep

Pay close attention to the positions that you are in while you sleep.  If you sleep on your stomach, you should consider flipping onto your back.

Sleeping on your back ensures that your neck can remain in a neutral position rather than awkwardly to the side. Not only can this affect your neck over time, but it can also develop lower back pain.

Relieve The Pain

For minor pain, try to apply heat a few times a day.  You do this either by going into a sauna, taking a hot shower, or applying heat pads.

You may want to consider getting a professional massage as well.  For temporary relief, you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

See a Doctor

If your pain persists for longer than a week with no signs of getting better, you should consider going to see a professional.  They’ll be able to determine whether there is an issue with your spine, or potentially even a pinched nerve. Until you see your doctor, be sure to limit your physical activity to prevent further injuries.

The last thing you want is to make the problem even worse.  Your doctor will be able to run a series of tests which will hopefully determine the cause and best course of action.
